Ko Tao (or Koh Tao) boasts some of the most beautiful and unspoilt beaches in Thailand. Since the island is so small, and the central jungle is so inaccessible, life in Ko Tao is centerd on the beach. Whether you go there for its world-famous diving, or just to soak up the authentic Thai beach lifestyle, Ko Tao is an essential destination for any traveler. The hotels, bars and diving schools are concentrated along the Sairee beach in the west. Ko Tao’s nightlife is noticeably less rowdy than in the neighbouring islands of Ko Phangan and Ko Samui. Couples sip beers in trendy, candlelit beach-bars, while the cheerful Irish pubs are filled with budget backpackers, sitting back and watching the waves. There are plenty of cheap hostels with friendly staff and a relaxed atmosphere, and also really beautiful high-end villas, situated away from the main stretch of beach. Ao Leuk, on the eastern side of the island, is almost totally deserted, and is best accessed by a boat from the Sairee beach. It’s good for day trips, but you can also stay overnight in a simple, no-frills beach-hut – the definitive tropical beach experience. Diving Beaches in Ko TaoScuba diving is what first put Koh Tao on the map, and it is only in recent years that casual divers and other tourists have started visiting the island. It’s a great place for beginners, with acres of shallow coral reefs that are guaranteed to give you beautiful dive, even on your first few outings. Sairee Beach is filled with dive centers, which cater for all skill-levels. Expert divers will be able to challenging enjoy off-shore boat dives, and it’s a great chance to get a more advanced diving qualification from licensed PADI dive schools. Although Ko Tao feels remote, it has become quite easy to get to. Ferries run regularly to and from Ko Phangan and Ko Samui, which has its own airport. Surat Thani, on the mainland, also offers a good ferry service, and a bus connection to other destinations in Thailand. In peak season (December-July) you can expect both more regular and more expensive ferries, but boat travel will always be very affordable. Didn't find what you were looking for?
